The Cats of London
Fifty pence from every box we sell goes to the cats of London. To Cats Protection, and in particular to their North West London Cat Centre at Harrow, where cats who have run out of luck wait for someone to change their minds about them.
How it works
You order a box. Any box: cheese, chocolate, or anything from the Cabinet. The price is the same as it ever was.
We give fifty pence. From every box, to Cats Protection, through a service called Virtue. You don't need to tick anything or add anything.
The cats at Harrow get it. Food, a vet when they need one, and a warm place to wait until the right person walks in.
Why
We love cats, and they bring such joy to all our lives. Buttons was Vera's cat, a black cat from Shepherd's Bush, and he came to her the way most good cats do: unplanned, slightly indignant, and then permanent. He sat on the counter while she tempered chocolate. He supervised.
He is on every box we send because it did not seem right to send them without him. And that is why we have asked every box to do something for the cats who haven't yet found their person.
Where the money goes
Cats Protection is the country's largest cat charity. The Harrow centre is the one nearest to us that takes in cats directly: the strays, the ones whose owners could no longer keep them, the ones nobody wanted because they were old or black or both.
Fifty pence is not a great deal on its own; it is the price of the cracker you leave on the plate. But it goes out with every box, and it adds up quietly, the way things do when nobody is looking.
If you'd like to do more
The centre is always looking for homes, and for people who can foster a cat for a few weeks while it finds its feet. You can find them through Cats Protection's website.
Buttons sends his regards, and asks that you check your hotel room for cats before you leave. There are never any, but he likes to be sure.
