Shipley, Andrew C. D. Crommelin, Swale Vincent, David Owen, H. H. Thomas, J. R. Ainsworth-Davis and other scientists. Ward, Lock & Co., London and Melbourne. Undated; the 1930s.

A prism on a stand, a beam of light, and a spectrum thrown across a dark wall: the cover tells you what kind of book this is. It is the Wonder Book series at its most ambitious, with real scientists writing for children rather than schoolmasters paraphrasing them. Shipley was Master of Christ's College, Cambridge, and a zoologist; Crommelin was the astronomer who worked out the orbit of Halley's Comet. They are here explaining the stars, the sea, the body and the atom to a reader of about ten, and doing it with twelve colour plates and nearly three hundred illustrations.

What makes it worth having now is the view it gives of science before the war changed everything: a grand, hopeful expedition that anyone with a prism and a clear night could join.

This copy shows its age honestly. The boards are rubbed and the edges worn, with a little loss to the cloth at the corners, and the cover's gilt border has dulled. Inside, some foxing to the early pages and otherwise clean. As with all genuine antiquarian books, previous owners may have left their names or notes in the margins, and we treat those as quiet conversations across time.

For the curious, and for anyone who still remembers the first time they saw a rainbow made on purpose.

Please note:

Each antiquarian book in the Ada & Vera Cabinet of Curiosities is unique.
